ENG    Amongst the collection of books of the university library of Belval, a common sign is to be found in various fields of knowledge. In literature, music, or even mathematics, punctuation marks pace the writings. They organize ideas, allow breaks in sentences, bring alternatives, or refer to elsewhere. Each garden is design to represent a punctuation mark: the star (*), the slash (/), and the coma (,). They give users the possibility of breaking away from the building’s air-conditioned interior, before they pursue their readings further. (*) The Star Garden inspires strolling or meandering through ideas and space alike. A web of paths crosses a soft landscape planted with star-shaped ground covers (e.g. starry clover and starry saxifrage). At the edge of each path, a sitting element allows rest underneath the shade of a palmate maple or a star magnolia. (/) The Slash Garden is a mineral space divided in two zones: a paved terrace and a sunken pit filled with gravel. A set of horizontal sticks made of corten steal support the growth of climbing plants. The garden accommodates talks and readings in small groups. (,) The Coma Garden is the place for a pause. The flooring disappears gradually to open up soil-ground for soft and wavy grasses curling with the wind such as feather grass. Small sitting units emerge from the savannah-like landscape, allowing oneself to immerse in thoughts.
